Allegro partners with Jena Batteries on flow rollout

Allegro Energy has formed a strategic partnership with Jena Batteries and Suqian Time Energy Technology to speed the commercial rollout of its flow battery technology.

The agreement combines Allegro's microemulsion electrolyte with Jena Batteries' manufacturing and system integration capabilities in flow battery systems. The companies plan to deploy pilot systems in Australia before considering international markets.

Allegro, an Australian long-duration energy storage company, has developed a water-based microemulsion electrolyte for flow batteries. The chemistry is designed to address the cost, safety and performance issues that have limited wider adoption of long-duration storage technologies.

Its system uses readily available materials and is non-flammable, making it suitable for applications that require repeated cycling over longer periods. Those use cases are drawing growing attention as electricity grids add more wind and solar generation and data centres seek storage that can handle uneven demand patterns.

The partnership gives Allegro access to larger-scale manufacturing without having to build that capacity itself. Jena Batteries and its parent, Suqian Time Energy Technology, bring experience in producing and integrating flow battery systems, providing a route to larger energy storage projects.

Thomas Nann, Chief Executive Officer of Allegro Energy, said the industry's challenge has shifted from proving the need for long-duration storage to building and installing systems at scale.

"Long-duration storage is no longer principally a question of whether the world needs it. The challenge is how we manufacture and deploy it at the scale the energy transition now requires," Nann said.

He said Allegro has focused on developing the underlying chemistry, while its new partners bring experience in turning battery designs into deployable systems.

"Allegro has spent years developing the chemistry. Jena Batteries brings significant manufacturing and system integration capability. Combining those strengths gives us a pathway to take an Australian-developed technology and prove that it can be manufactured and deployed at commercial scale," Nann said.

Data centre demand

The agreement comes as long-duration storage draws greater interest from sectors with heavy and variable electricity demand. Data centres have become a prominent example, with operators seeking storage that can cope with rapid cycling and irregular load profiles.

That demand is also prompting broader debate about the limits of lithium-ion batteries in some stationary storage settings. While lithium-ion remains a major part of the storage market, flow batteries and other chemistries are being examined for applications that require longer discharge periods and frequent cycling.

For Allegro, the tie-up offers a path from Australian research to overseas production. That matters for emerging battery developers, many of which face the challenge of proving that laboratory technology can be manufactured at volume and integrated into large projects.

Jena Batteries said the two groups bring different but compatible strengths to the arrangement. A spokesperson pointed to chemistry development on one side and manufacturing and integration on the other.

"Allegro Energy has developed a promising approach to flow battery chemistry. By combining our complementary strengths, we are creating the foundation for safe, scalable and cost-effective long-duration energy storage solutions," the spokesperson said.

Manufacturing route

The partnership also highlights a recurring issue for Australian clean technology companies: how to connect domestic intellectual property with industrial-scale production. Rather than building a full manufacturing base from scratch, Allegro is seeking to use an established platform through Jena Batteries and Suqian Time Energy Technology.

That model could offer a faster path to commercial deployment if pilot systems perform as expected. It also reflects the broader structure of the battery industry, where innovation, manufacturing and project integration are often spread across different countries and specialist companies.

Nann said the arrangement could help ensure Australian-developed technology does not remain confined to the research stage.

"The opportunity for Australia isn't simply to deploy batteries invented and manufactured somewhere else. We have the science and engineering capability to develop important new storage technologies here. Partnerships like this give Australian innovation a credible pathway into global manufacturing and global markets," Nann said.
