Kingston Digital launches high-performance DC2000B M.2 SSD

Thu, 22nd Aug 2024

Kingston Digital has introduced a new data centre SSD, the DC2000B, designed for use in high-volume rack-mount servers. The M.2 SSD leverages the Gen 4x4 PCIe interface with 112-layer 3D TLC NAND technology to enhance performance and reliability for internal server boot applications and other system needs.

The DC2000B is optimised to meet the demanding requirements of server environments by including on-board hardware-based power loss protection (PLP), a feature not commonly found in M.2 SSDs. The inclusion of an integrated aluminium heatsink aims to ensure thermal compatibility across various system designs.

Kingston's SSD business manager for EMEA, Tony Hollingsbee, commented, "Whitebox server makers and Tier 1 server OEMs continue to equip their latest generation servers with M.2 sockets for boot purposes as well as internal data caching. DC2000B was designed to deliver the necessary performance and write endurance to handle a variety of high duty cycle server workloads. Bringing the boot drives internal to the server preserves the valuable front loading drive bays for data storage."

The DC2000B SSD is available in three capacities: 240GB, 480GB, and 960GB. It is backed by a limited five-year warranty, free technical support, and Kingston reliability assurance.

The SSD's technical details are as follows:

  • PCIe 4.0 NVMe Performance: Utilises PCIe Gen 4x4 lanes for high-performance speeds.
  • On-board Power Loss Protection (PLP): Reduces the possibility of data loss and/or corruption due to unexpected power-off.
  • Low Latency and IOPS Consistency: Firmware optimised to deliver low latency and IO consistency for high-duty cycle workloads.
  • Form Factor: M.2 2280
  • Interface: PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe
  • NAND: 3D TLC

The sequential read/write speeds are as follows:

  • 240GB: 4500/400 MBs
  • 480GB: 7000/800 MBs
  • 960GB: 7000/1300 MBs

For steady-state 4k read/write IOPS, the specifications are:

  • 240GB: 260000/18000 IOPS
  • 480GB: 530000/32000 IOPS
  • 960GB: 540000/47000 IOPS

Total Bytes Written (TBW) are:

  • 240GB: 175 TBW
  • 480GB: 350 TBW
  • 960GB: 700 TBW

The average read latency for all three capacities (240GB - 960GB) is 70 microseconds. In contrast, the average write latency is 53 microseconds for the 240GB, 29 microseconds for the 480GB, and 20 microseconds for the 960GB models.

The power consumption details are:

  • 240GB: Average read 2.97W, average write 4.02W, max read 3.01W, max write 4.09W
  • 480GB: Average read 3.22W, average write 5.60W, max read 3.29W, max write 5.77W
  • 960GB: Average read 3.26W, average write 7.36W, max read 3.36W, max write 7.80W

The SSD supports a storage temperature range of -40°C to 85°C and an operating temperature range of 0°C to 70°C. The dimensions are 80mm x 22mm x 8.3mm with respective weights of 9g, 10g, and 11g for the 240GB, 480GB and 960GB models. Additionally, the device has a non-operating vibration endurance of 20G Peak (10–2000Hz) and a Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) of 2 million hours.
