BSO unveils DataOne, Europe's largest data centre by 2028

Fri, 29th Nov 2024

BSO has announced the launch of DataOne, Europe's first giga-scale data centre, which will be located in France and is set to become the continent's largest data centre by 2028.

Financed with the support of the Ardian debt fund and major commercial banks, the DataOne project begins its journey from an existing Tier-3 data centre campus. Presently, it offers an IT load of 15MW, encompassing 50,000 m² across 14 hectares between Grenoble (Eybens) and Lyon (Villefontaine).

Trusted by prominent international companies, the facilities are ISO 27001, 14001, 50001, and SOC 1 & 2 certified. DataOne features a carrier-neutral campus with AI-agnostic infrastructures, interconnected via dedicated dark fibre and 100G+ DWDM wavelengths provided by a network of seven connectivity providers, with future plans to expand this number.

By 2028, DataOne will provide 400MW of AI-compatible infrastructure. The site will operate with zero-carbon emissions at scale by integrating renewable energy sourced from EDF's hydroelectric power, supplemented by nuclear energy for backup.

The deployment timeline for DataOne includes an initial launch of 80MW capacity in April 2025, following a 16-week transformation, making it Europe's largest AI-focused data centre. The facility will expand to 200MW by Q4 2026, reaching full completion at 400MW operational capacity by late 2028.

To meet the needs of modern and future GPU technologies, DataOne will utilise direct liquid-cooled Facilities Distribution Units, which can accommodate heterogeneous AI infrastructures with power densities from 60 to 250KW per rack. The design achieves a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of 1.06-1.15, standing out against European regulatory standards.

The initiative underpins BSO's zero-carbon strategy, utilising 100% renewable energy, recycling waste heat to support local industries, and offering customers real-time performance metrics through an integrated portal.

Charles-Antoine Beyney and Michael Ourabah lead the DataOne project. Charles-Antoine, recognised for founding Etix Everywhere and its eventual sale to Vantage in 2020, is dedicated to crafting a sustainable trajectory for data centres.

Charles-Antoine Beyney, Co-Founder of BSO and CEO of DataOne, said, "DataOne represents a bold vision for the future of AI infrastructure in Europe — a sustainable, high-performance hub that sets a new standard for the industry."

The launch of DataOne signifies a major development in Europe's data centre landscape, with plans to scale its AI-compatible infrastructure to 400MW by 2028 while focusing on sustainability and zero-carbon operations. This initiative aligns with evolving demands for high-performance computing, renewable energy integration, and regulatory compliance, aiming to support the growth of AI and data-driven technologies across the continent.
