Britain’s most expensive car repairs reach GBP £78,200 this year

Tue, 28th Oct 2025

MotorEasy has compiled data revealing the most expensive car repairs in Britain over the past year, bringing attention to significant costs faced by motorists.

Analysing thousands of claims and vehicle warranty plans, MotorEasy assembled what it described as "Frankenstein's Car"-a conceptual vehicle constructed from the nation's priciest car parts repairs documented within a single year. The notional cost of repairs for these components totals GBP £78,200, highlighting issues that can affect both luxury and mainstream vehicles alike.

Expensive repairs

The costliest single component came in the form of the transmission for an Audi A7, which alone amounted to GBP £19,400. Other high-value items included a Range Rover engine replacement at GBP £15,900 and a drive battery for a Mercedes C-Class costing GBP £11,000. Further substantial sums were reported for turbo repairs on a Land Rover Discovery at GBP £10,000 and the steering on a Jaguar XE at GBP £7,000.

MotorEasy's fictional list of components and their associated repair bills also featured the air conditioning from a Mercedes S-Class (GBP £3,000), an alternator from an Audi Q7 (GBP £3,200), fuel system repairs for a BMW 4 Series (GBP £1,900), and a gearbox from a Land Rover Discovery Sport (GBP £6,800). The overall total across these nine jobs reached GBP £78,200.

The press release noted that there were a range of similarly expensive alternatives. For example, a gearbox replacement from a Nissan Qashqai would have cost GBP £4,100. While this is lower than the corresponding Discovery Sport repair, it still represents a significant outlay for many owners.

Technology and rising costs

While some motorists may expect high repair costs with premium marque vehicles, MotorEasy pointed to the increasing prevalence of advanced technology and hybrid components across all types of cars as a factor driving up repair prices. Even routine maintenance can be affected by more complex parts and systems now found in mid-range models.

Company data suggests that escalating repair costs are not just a seasonal concern linked to Halloween but a persistent issue for drivers throughout the year. Unexpected breakdowns and the costs associated with them can put a serious strain on household budgets.

Duncan McClure Fisher, MotorEasy founder and CEO of Intelligent Motoring, said: "The figures are frightening and not just because it's Halloween. Today's cars are more advanced than ever, but that means they're also more complex and expensive to fix when something goes wrong. "Frankenstein's Car is a light-hearted way to remind drivers that breakdowns can be scary in more ways than one. It's a seasonal take on the data that sits behind our MotorEasy car Reliability Index - a live dataset that tracks the relative frequency and cost of repairs across 341 different vehicle models".

Implications for drivers

These findings highlight the importance for car owners of planning for potentially large, unexpected repair bills. The press release emphasised that as automotive technology advances, repair costs are rising faster than some drivers may realise, underscoring the value of regular maintenance and suitable warranty cover.

The MotorEasy Reliability Index compiles data across hundreds of vehicle models to monitor both the frequency and cost of repairs. According to the company, utilising this data helps drivers better understand the risks and financial implications of vehicle ownership in today's market.

While the concept of "Frankenstein's Car" has a seasonal link to Halloween, the concern over high repair costs is presented as an ongoing matter for Britain's motorists, regardless of the time of year.
