EDHEC launches Quantum Institute to boost business innovation

Sat, 22nd Nov 2025

EDHEC has established a new Quantum Institute aimed at equipping business leaders and students with the knowledge required for the impact of quantum science on business, finance, and broader society.

Institute mission

The Quantum Institute's mission is to lead research, education, innovation, and knowledge-sharing initiatives that link developments in quantum science with their practical implications for business and society. The institute's core areas of focus are applied research, education, industry innovation, and influence programmes to promote a wider understanding of quantum science.

Sectoral impact

Quantum science leverages principles such as superposition, entanglement, and measurement to enhance computing, communications, and sensing capabilities. Investment in quantum technologies has now reached over USD $40 billion globally, spanning both public and private sectors. Key areas poised for significant change include finance, energy, cybersecurity, space, and biotechnology.

The expansion of quantum applications is prompting new demands for applied research and focused education. The Quantum Institute seeks to translate advancements in the field into practical business and societal solutions.

Programmeme areas

The institute will initially address four main areas: applied research focused on extracting value from quantum advances in finance, communications, and security; education to introduce quantum concepts to management curricula; innovation to accelerate industrial and entrepreneurial adoption; and programmes to encourage knowledge sharing and promote a quantum culture.

Initial programmes will cover quantum mechanics' fundamentals, quantum information and communications, and applications of quantum technologies in finance and insurance. The first phase is aimed at bridging the gap between theoretical breakthroughs and their real-world uses.

Leadership and vision

The Quantum Institute will be led by Professor Lionel Martellini. He is a professor at EDHEC and formerly served as Director of the EDHEC-Risk Institute. Martellini will oversee efforts to ensure the institute's research and educational programmes address emerging needs in both business and public sectors.

"Quantum science is expected to be a key driver of transformation for business, the economy and society. The expertise and research capabilities developed at the EDHEC Quantum Institute will play an important role in how businesses and their leaders adapt and leverage the second quantum revolution," said Lionel Martellini, Professor, EDHEC.
