Commvault Cloud to bolster AWS European Sovereign Cloud

Sat, 20th Dec 2025

Commvault will offer its cloud platform on the forthcoming AWS European Sovereign Cloud as a launch partner, expanding its data protection and cyber resilience services for customers subject to strict regional rules on data use.

The move aligns Commvault with Amazon Web Services' new independent cloud for Europe, which will operate separately from existing AWS regions and host all infrastructure within the European Union.

The AWS European Sovereign Cloud is set to launch in the German state of Brandenburg. AWS will operate the service from within the EU, and only employees residing in the bloc will run its day-to-day operations, including access to data centres, technical support and customer service.

AWS has positioned the new environment for European governments and heavily regulated industries. The company states that its services within the sovereign cloud will not access or use customer data without agreement from the customer.

Commvault Cloud on AWS European Sovereign Cloud will target organisations that need to meet regional sovereignty requirements while dealing with cybersecurity and resilience demands. Commvault describes its software as suited to cloud environments and designed for resilience at scale for AWS customers.

The platform delivers data protection through a Software-as-a-Service model. It uses AI-enabled discovery and classification tools. It also offers AI-driven recommendations for protection policies.

Cyber resilience functions include air-gapped backups that isolate protected data from production systems. The platform also combines AI-enhanced threat detection and response tools. Another feature is cleanroom recovery orchestration, which allows customers to create isolated environments to analyse threats, test processes, or stage restore operations.

Darren Thomson, Field CTO of Security, EMEAI at Commvault, said the launch comes as European organisations face combined regulatory and cybersecurity pressures.

"Customers across Europe are under immense pressure to meet sovereignty requirements while defending against escalating cyber threats," said Darren Thomson, Field CTO - Security, EMEAI, Commvault. "As a launch partner for the AWS European Sovereign Cloud, we plan to deliver cyber resilience bringing Commvault's strongest protection and recovery capabilities to the organisations that need them most."

The AWS European Sovereign Cloud will run independently from existing AWS regions. It will remain fully located within EU borders and operate under EU-based control. AWS has said it will apply its existing approach to customer data access in the sovereign environment, with customers retaining control over when and how AWS services interact with their data.

The collaboration builds on an established partnership between Commvault and AWS in cloud data protection. Commvault recently achieved the AWS Resilience Competency in the Recovery category. AWS also named the company its 2025 Global Storage Partner of the Year.

Commvault Cloud is targeted for availability on the AWS European Sovereign Cloud in the first half of 2026. Commvault plans to finalise pricing before general availability, and it will align the structure with AWS's model for software-as-a-service infrastructure and compute in the new sovereign environment.
