BCS launches data centre sustainability service amid AI boom

Thu, 29th Jan 2026

BCS Consultancy has launched a new Sustainable Development Service dedicated to data centre projects, appointing James Rogers Jones to lead the initiative as Head of Sustainable Development.

The move comes as the industry grapples with intensifying challenges, including restricted power availability, heightened planning risks, and the ongoing struggle for community acceptance. By formalising this service line, the consultancy aims to help developers navigate an increasingly complex regulatory and social landscape.

The firm highlighted that the data centre sector is under unprecedented scrutiny regarding energy and water consumption, a trend directly linked to the surging demand for AI-related infrastructure. BCS noted that this service is not a standalone offering but is integrated into its existing expertise in project management, cost management, commercial advisory, and technical delivery. Describing the launch as a strategic evolution, the consultancy stated that the initiative represents a fundamental shift in its approach to delivery across all areas of its business.

New service line

BCS said the Sustainable Development Service will focus on long-term decision-making for clients. It listed data centre roadmaps, portfolio strategies, sustainability frameworks and policy advisory as core areas of work.

BCS Consultancy has further linked the launch of its Sustainable Development Service to the increasingly contested conditions surrounding data centre growth. The firm specifically cited rising community opposition and a string of project cancellations across several European markets as key drivers for the new offering.

Operating across the EMEA region, BCS maintains a strategic presence with offices in London, Frankfurt, Berlin, Vienna, and Milan. Since its inception in 2016, the consultancy has built a portfolio that spans new developments, site expansions, and complex facility upgrades. This latest strategic shift signals the company's intent to embed sustainability at the core of its modernisation and delivery programmes.

Planning pressures

Data centre development has faced tighter constraints in parts of Europe due to grid access and local planning decisions. Operators and developers have increasingly discussed limits on available power and the pace of new connections. They have also faced more local debate about land use, noise, water use and the impact of large facilities on surrounding communities.

BCS said its upcoming BCS 2026 Data Centre Trends Report will address the issue of community expectations. The company said communities ask operators for more than renewable power. It said communities raise concerns about water usage and local electricity prices.

Leadership hire

Rogers Jones joins BCS from advisory roles. BCS said he has worked with Digital Realty, Google, GreenScale and AtlasEdge. It said his background includes strategy, compliance and operational sustainability.

"Data centres underpin our modern economy and are one of the most impactful industries in the world. These assets can deliver enormous value to both clients and the communities they serve," said James Rogers Jones, Head of Sustainable Development, BCS Consultancy.

BCS framed the role as one that links sustainability with operational issues. "Sustainability should no longer be framed primarily around ESG signalling or long-term carbon targets. Instead, it is increasingly becoming linked to energy security, price stability and operational resilience," said Rogers Jones.

Client expectations

BCS said clients want advisory work that combines commercial planning with environmental and community considerations. The firm positioned the service as part of that shift in expectations, particularly as developers work through site selection, grid constraints and planning discussions.

Chris Coward, Chief Operating Officer at BCS, said developers have to deal with multiple pressures at once. "Our clients are facing increasingly complex challenges from power constraints and planning risk to community scrutiny and long-term resilience. They need a simpler way to achieve their sustainability goals with project managers, cost managers and technical experts who understand sustainability and can deliver outcomes as part of their day job," said Chris Coward, Chief Operating Officer, BCS Consultancy.

BCS linked the hire of Rogers Jones to its broader advisory work on long-term planning across project lifecycles. "The launch of our Sustainability Service is about delivering better outcomes and aligns with how our clients expect us to operate. James brings both credibility and clarity of thinking, and his appointment strengthens our ability to support responsible, long-term decision-making across the entire lifecycle," said Coward.

BCS said the new service will sit alongside its existing work on delivering and optimising data centre infrastructure. The company said it expects sustainability issues to feature more directly in project definition, procurement decisions and engagement with local stakeholders as AI-related demand continues to shape new builds and expansion plans.
