Siemens has developed one of the most innovative circuit protection devices which could revolutionise the world of circuit protection, the SENTRON ECPD (Electronic Circuit Protection Device). The pioneering device offers ultra-fast, multifunctional, parameterisable, and sustainable features, providing several functionalities in one product up to 1,000 times faster than conventional solutions and saving up to 80% less space in the distribution board.
This device electronically switches off circuit faults during errors and, if necessary, triggers the mechanical isolating contact downstream. Traditionally, disconnection was managed entirely through electro-mechanical elements. Andreas Matthé, CEO of Electrical Products at Siemens Smart Infrastructure, said, "This innovation offers a variety of benefits and has the potential to revolutionise today's circuit protection world."
The innovative SENTRON ECPD enables new strategies in electrical planning, increases safety and flexibility, and delivers substantial space and energy savings compared to conventional solutions. Matth added, "For the first time in the history of circuit protection, it is possible to benefit from several functionalities in one product and to activate them as required by the individual application or adapt them if needed. All of this, combined with the solid-state switching technology, enables up to a thousand times faster, wear-free switching."
The SENTRON ECPD significantly increases safety for people, systems, and electrical equipment by disconnecting up to a thousand times speedier than conventional circuit breakers, minimising the short-circuit energy produced. In addition, it integrates a cyclical self-test, including the RCD function, which elevates safety to an entirely new level not covered by current plans.
The smart SENTRON ECPD offers a range of functions in a compact design, saving space and costs. Adjustments can be easily made, and new functions can be activated using the SENTRON powerconfig app. This device adapts perfectly to the application's requirements, such as rated current, tripping limits or behaviour, offering key planning and cost-related advantages.
Furthermore, SENTRON ECPD's comprehensive transparency on energy consumption in the final circuit, through radio-based communication with the SENTRON PowerCenter 1000 and 3000 gateways, enables the optimising of systems and processes as part of energy management in line with ISO 50001. This leads to effective reductions in both energy and operating costs.
A significant advancement is the capability to perform detailed condition monitoring of applications at the final circuit level, substantially increasing availability and operational reliability. Coupled with the detection of irregularities and deviations, this provides a reliable planning basis for preventive maintenance and can be easily integrated into higher-level systems using the open Modbus TCP standard.
SENTRON ECPD incorporates sustainable design by amalgamating multiple product functions in one device. This unique design could lead to savings of up to 80% on electronics, 90% on metals, and 90% on plastics. Compared to conventional technology, it requires up to 80% less space in the distribution board, making it about 90% lighter than comparable devices.
