Verne Global, a provider of sustainable data centre solutions, has revealed a significant innovation at its Finnish data centre, The Rock. The company has introduced direct liquid cooling (DLC) technology that puts Verne Global at the cutting edge of the industry.

The Rock centre, utilising 100% green energy sources from wind and solar power, has emerged as a crucial solution to managing the surge in demand for strong data centre cooling solutions. Kim Gunnelius, Managing Director of Verne Global Finland, emphasises, "The surge in AI, machine learning and high-performance computing is amplifying the need for robust data centre cooling solutions."

The average data centre dedicates around 40% of its energy consumption to cooling its infrastructure, and the increasing network demands of AI models require a significantly higher level of computational density, which puts additional strain on conventional air-cooling approaches. Gunnelius explains, "As a result, liquid cooling is quickly gaining traction in the market."

Working with industry leaders Dell Technologies and Intel, Verne Global has introduced DLC to The Rock campus. The implemented solution, reducing dependence on conventional cooling, features DLC on Dell DLC3000 rack solutions with up to 80kW+ cooling capacity and 4th Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors. This accomplishment marks Dell's first such liquid cooling deployment in Finland.

The Rock, built inside Finnish bedrock, offers a natural advantage in reducing the need for cooling. This distinctive data centre includes nine separate tunnel halls, originally quarried by Finnish Defence forces, providing built-in security and energy efficiency. Highlighting the broad consequences of this innovation, Gunnelius observes, "Our Nordic data centre campuses are designed to sustainably host, support and scale the most demanding AI models in the world. Liquid cooling isn't just an advancement; it’s an integral component of our vision to exceed the ever-evolving demands of the technology landscape."

Besides the groundbreaking integration of DLC technology, Verne Global Finland will also have samples of DLC cold plate technology available for customer evaluation. As of January, at their London data centre, direct and immersion liquid cooling samples will be on display for customers to personally evaluate, showcasing the firm's commitment to cutting-edge data centre solutions.
